Weekly Roundup

Busy keeping up with your business? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Take a few minutes and catch up with happened this week in the world of self-employment.

NEW THIS WEEK

This week will be one that we will remember for some time to come. While we have definitely faced our share of tragedy this week, Business Insider writer Max Nisen highlights some of the good that happened this week that may have gotten overshadowed in his article, 11 Extraordinary Things That Happened In America In Just The Last Week.

This week’s theme seems to be self-improvement…

As an business owner, stats are part of your everyday workflow. How many sales did you have today? How many hours did this job take? However, some of the most important things to monitor involve yourself. Sometime we focus so much on external conditions that we forget we can improve our own world by tracking a few key areas. Chris Hollindale, co-founder and CTO of Hasty, feels the same way. In this article, he breaks down key areas entrepreneurs should be monitoring for themselves.

If you’ve considered going back to college, it may be interesting to note that the state of college education is changing. The U.S. Department of Education approved financial aid for a new self-paced, online learning college. Southern New Hampshire University’s College For America Program is “the first degree program to completely decouple from the credit hour.” What makes this program different is that, instead of logging in hours for credits, their program offers competency-based education. Basically, you earn credits when you demonstrate competency.

It’s always interesting to see how big brands create viral marketing campaigns. Dove’s new “Real Beauty Sketches” ad campaign took the web by storm this week and already has over seven million views on YouTube. For the campaign, Dove had seven women describe themselves to an FBI forensic artist so they could create composite sketches based from their descriptions. They later had strangers, who had meet the women earlier in the day, describe these women to the sketch artist for a comparative composite sketch. The results, shown in the video below, were pretty shocking. To tie it all together, Dove created the perfect viral storm with a great tagline, “You are more beautiful than you think.”

Bad news for California small businesses…

While tax day has come and gone, you may be hit with some unexpected bad news if your small business is in California. Last week a Federal court reversed a tax break meant to encourage entrepreneurship in the state. California is now seeking to retroactively bill small business owners and investors to recoup $120 million. They’ve already begun the process by billing more than 2,000 taxpayers for these back taxes.
