I used to be broke.
I mean really broke.
Bumming a place to crash in a friend’s apartment back in the day, I recall scrounging for dimes and quarters in the seams of the couch I slept on so I could put gas in my car to get to my minimum wage job.
Man, that was the worst.
But not now. Not by a long shot.
I am writing this ad on a high-speed train from Beijing to Hangzhou, China, where I am attending a conference of some of the best entrepreneurs on the planet. I suppose the only thing better than getting invited to attend a conference of brilliant, enthusiastic, creative, high-minded entrepreneurs half-way across the globe is . . . getting paid to go.
Not bad, not bad at all.
I flew here a few days early and stayed at the Grand Hyatt, the nicest hotel in Beijing. I found a wonderful guide named Ming whom I paid handsomely to give me a private two-day tour of that amazing place – The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the whole shebang.
I am not telling you these things to impress you, but to impress upon you that if such a life is possible for me, given how broke used to be, then it is possible for you too.
If I can go from not being able to pay my rent to getting paid big bucks to do what I love, why is that not possible for you too?
It is. Why not you? It can be you. Read on.
Get ready to kill your money bear
In the movie The Edge, Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins play two men whose small plane crashes in the Alaskan outback. They have no provisions, no tools save a jackknife and a small book Hopkins had brought along called, “How to survive in the wild.”
And wouldn’t you know it, soon enough, the two men are being stalked by a bear. (Well, what kind of movie would it have been anyway if nothing had happened?)
Baldwin’s character is petrified, convinced they will die at the hands of the Grizzly. But not Hopkins. In his little book there is a chapter entitled, “How to Kill a Bear.” Hopkins is convinced they can do it. Baldwin quivers.
“What one man can do, another can do!” Hopkins tells Baldwin. “If someone else figured out how to kill a bear in the woods, then we can too. Now say it after me – What one person can do, another can do too!” Hopkins bellows.
Baldwin can’t bring himself to say it. He doesn’t believe it. But Hopkins will not be dismissed. “Say it after me – What one man can do another can do!!” And wouldn’t you know it, before long, Baldwin not only begins to say it, he begins to believe it too. “What one person can do another can do too!” he finally yells.
You know how the story has to end, right? With the bear on their trail, the men are tested to their limit. But they prevail. The Grizzly attacks and the men, yes, kill it. (How? They lifted the crude spears they had whittled, and the bear impales itself on the spears inches from their faces.)
What one man can do, another can do.
If one person has figured out how to start a business and free himself financially, another can too.

Imagine not worrying about money
Money just isn’t the same issue for me anymore. Oh sure, it’s an issue, because life is, well, life. But these days it’s a nice issue. An easy issue. Imagine not worrying about how you will pay the mortgage or the rent or how you will pay that bill. Imagine instead trying to figure out which investment will be a better place to park your extra dough so that you will make even more money while you sleep.
Making money while you sleep. Now there’s a concept.
