    Preparing for Self-Employment

There are lots of people these days that would love to be self employed rather than working for someone else. By going self employed, you can enjoy a wide range of benefits. This includes doing something that you love and are passionate about, being your own boss, setting your own schedule, and being able to earn more money.

If you have the right skills and experience, you can set up as self employed pretty easily. Of course, you should make sure that you have some savings to cover you in case of teething problems. You could even do some self employed work on a part time basis and still work for a while until your business gets off the ground. This is a great way to test the water and eliminate the risk of losing your income if things don’t work out.

When it comes to the cost of setting up, it all depends on the type of self employed work you plan to do. Sometimes, you will require very little or even no capital upfront to set up as self employed. For instance, if you plan to become a freelance writer or website designer all you need is your computer and somewhere to work from. You can purchase home office furniture cheaply, particularly if you buy second hand. You can also look for small business credit cards to provide financial backup or to help cover any setup costs.

When you start up your business, one of the things you will need to do is try and market your services. You can use various methods to do this. For instance, if you are planning to offer services on a local basis such as computer repairs you can send out leaflets and put up posters. If you want to offer your services on a global basis you can use social media marketing, which is both cheap and effective. Make sure you create a solid marketing strategy detailing the marketing methods that you will be using, as this can help to keep you more organized.

One of the things that you do need to bear in mind is that while you are getting your business off the ground, you will most likely have to put in a lot of hours. This is because you have to make a name for yourself, market your services, and try and build up your client list. In addition, you have to carry out work when clients or customers do come to you so there are various things that you will have to juggle. As a result, you need to make sure that you are well organized and that you prioritize effectively.

Once your business gets going, you should make sure you aim to set yourself appropriate working hours. It is all too easy to get carried away and end up working really long hours. It can also be tempting to just take time off on a whim, which could lead to lost work.
