  • I agree that it is a very personal decision. As I used to say when I worked at home -- the good news is that you see your kids a lot. The bad news is that you see your kids a lot.

  • I think not working in an "office" is a very personal decision. Personally, I can't stand working in a Starbucks - too noisy. I also can't stand working in a cube farm or shared office space for the same reason. A dedicated space at home is perfect for me - all my stuff is there, it's quiet, and I can focus. AND I can shut the door and walk away when my designated work time is over - which *I* decide since one of the perks of working from home and being self-employed is setting hours that work *for me.*

  • There's an underlying assumption here that I believe is incorrect. For some business owners, integration is one of the goals. Arbitrarily dividing time into "work" and "personal" is inefficient, stressful, and drains productivity. I understand that some people function this way - whether by nature or by nurture. Making time and space for work is critical for all of us; "erecting walls" is not universally the best way to do it. Those structured souls in the office who believe that this is so are the ones who drive some of us screaming from offices in the first place. It makes far more sense to me to dispatch a quick personal matter when the call arrives than to play phone tag all day long because your breaks don't match the doctor's phone schedule.
